Live Resin Vs Live Rosin: What’s The Difference?

Cannabis concentrates are more popular than ever, and you may have seen the words shatter, hash, live resin, live rosin, budder, and more on the Greenfields Cannabis Co. menu. If you’re feeling confused about these various formulas, you’re not alone!

Today we’re breaking down the differences between live rosin and live resin to help you better understand how they’re made, what makes them popular, and how you can introduce these potent concentrates into your lifestyle.

Live Resin Vs Live Rosin

Also known as extracts, cannabis concentrates are an isolated form of the cannabis plant designed to deliver the purest combination of cannabinoids and terpenes possible. By removing excess plant material, extracts boast THC levels varying between 60-90%.

Both live rosin and live resin begin with freshly harvested cannabis plants (hence the word “live” in the name), rather than dried, cured flower.

What is Live Resin?

Live Resin is processed from the entire cannabis plant (stems, leaves, flower, and stalk) which is flash-frozen at temperatures below -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, it is blasted with butane in an extraction process that isolates all the trichomes from the plant material. Finally, the live resin is dried at low temperatures in a vacuum chamber to purge any residual solvents off before consumption.

This method of extraction is also known as BHO or Butane Hash Oil and results in an extremely potent concentrate.

Characteristics

  • Golden or amber-colored
  • Texture may be granular or “sugary”
  • Can be wet or soft and pliable enough to crumble and mix with ground flower

Taste

Because the extraction process for live resin retains the full spectrum of a plant’s natural terpenes and cannabinoids, the end product is considered to have a superior flavor profile.

What is Live Rosin?

Also extracted from the fresh, uncured flower, live rosin is a solventless concentrate produced through a combination of ice, water, heat and pressure. First the fresh plant material is washed into bubble hash using ice, water and agitation. The bubble bags are then pulled from the ice water bath and the sleeves are cleaned out. Sleeves are all different microns, size of the holes in the sleeves vary to allow the capture of different size trichome heads. A full spectrum rosin is when all the microns are combined and then pressed using a rosin press, which uses pressure and heat.

Live rosin is considered to be one of the purest of all THC concentrates due to the lack of heavy metal solvents, called hydrocarbons, such as butane and propane.

Characteristics

  • Colors range from rich gold to near-transparent
  • The substance is thick or waxy
  • Bursting with robust terpy aromas

Taste

Live rosins are often touted as one of the tastiest concentrates thanks to its lack of solvent and its terpene-rich purity. The flavor profile of live rosin can vary greatly, as taste is dependent on the quality and strain of the utilized plant. It all starts in the grow!

What is the Difference between Live Resin and Live Rosin?

Although both live rosin and live resin are powerful extracts that begin with fresh cannabis plant matter, there are some key differences. Consider the following:

  • EXTRACTION: Live rosin is a solventless extract, whereas live resin is extracted using butane or propane or a blend of the two.
  • FLAVOR: Live rosin is generally considered tastier due to the lack of solvents and the full spectrum extract.
  • TEXTURE: Live resin tends to look like a mix between a sauce and a wax. Live rosin has a consistency closer to budder after it comes to room temperature.
  • PRICE: As a solvent-based extract, live resin is usually more affordable.

How Do You Consume Live Resin and Live Rosin?

Most concentrates are versatile enough to be consumed in multiple ways, including:

  1. Vaporized with a dab rig or with a nectar collector
  2. Smoked along with ground flower in a joint or a bowl
  3. Eaten in the form of edibles
