What Exactly Is 420?
Simply put: it is an unofficial holiday to celebrate the cannabis culture and history. Often celebrated by smoking cannabis and learning about the benefits of legal cannabis consumption. While this may seem like a simple celebration, there is much more to this holiday than you may know.
While there are a few opinions about how the term came about, there’s one credible story that we’ll highlight. The term 420 was coined in the 1970s by a group of athletic high school students in Marin County, California, who used it as a code name. In 1971, the five students at San Rafael High School would meet at 4:20 p.m. by the campus statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to smoke the reefer. They chose that specific date because they knew that most students would be done with their extracurricular activities by then. This group — Steve Capers, Dave Reddix, Jeffery Noel, Larry Schwartz, Mark Gravich — became known as the Waldos because they met at a wall. They would say “420” to each other as code to mean marijuana.
The 420 activities grew in popularity, and it eventually became a code for marijuana. For calendar considerations, 420 was ultimately transformed to 4/20, and the day of celebration was born.

The World’s Largest Free 420 Celebration, aka Mile High 420 Festival, was a massive success in 2018 and 2009, and the same team is delighted to do it again this year. The festival has changed hands and is no longer known as a rally.
